If your basement flooded tomorrow, would you know what to do?
Rainy season is around the corner in Virginia, and while natural disasters do cause a lot of damage each year, most of the floods we see are actually caused by systems in the home itself, like water heaters and plumbing.
Here’s what’s tough about that: it can be harder to catch immediately. Maybe you haven't been down to your basement for a couple days, or maybe you’re on vacation.
Either way, it’s worth having a plan in place so you know what to do in the event of a flood.
Here are a few immediate action steps I’d suggest including:
✅ If the flood is due to a leak or burst pipe, shut off your water.
This keeps the situation from worsening until help can arrive and can prevent future damage to your home and belongings.
✅ Make sure there are no immediate hazards in the area.
Ensure that you’ve shut off the power before attempting to unplug or remove electronic devices that have come into contact with water, and wear personal protective gear if you need to be in the home.
✅ Don’t wait to call us!
Standing water is an emergency, and it causes more damage the longer it sits. Don’t wait to confirm coverage with your insurance company before reaching out - we can start mitigating the damage before you have a claim number. Once you have a claim number, we can send loss information and invoices directly to your insurance company.
When you’re standing in a floorful of water, you need someone you can trust to call. Someone who won’t put you on hold - and who will get there fast.
Our response time for friends and neighbors experiencing emergencies like flooding are one of the things I’m most proud of about Umpire:

"Stephen was amazing from start to finish after a busted frozen pipe flooded two floors of our business. He showed up almost immediately and spent nearly three days moving, cleaning, and clearing out the damaged rooms. He made an overwhelming experience less painful and got us up and running in time to open for business without needing to shut down."
