Time to clean your gutters

Ugh, I know. But it’s important.

“I wish I was outside cleaning my gutters right now!”

…said no homeowner ever.

But with Virginia’s rainiest season just around the corner, a little prep now can save you a lot of heartache later.

When your gutters are clogged or not draining properly, it’s not just puddly and inconvenient. Over time, it can cause some serious damage to your home.

(And the truth is, debris isn’t the only thing that can keep your gutters from draining properly. Take a look at our latest homeowner guide to find out why your gutters overflow even when they’re “clean.”)

So how can you make sure your gutters are set up to win when the rain picks up?

Two things I’d recommend:

✅ Clean your gutters on a schedule.

Depending on where you live and surrounding tree coverage, you may have to clean gutters more or less often.

Once a year is a good minimum if there’s no tree coverage over your home, but twice a year - spring and fall - is a good rule of thumb for most.

✅ Take a walk in the rain.

Next time we get a rainy day, throw on a rain jacket, grab an umbrella, and assess what’s going on out there.

Are your gutters sagging? Is water spilling over the sides? Do you notice any water pooling around the base of your house? (I hope you answered no to all three of those questions!)

Nobody wants to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon cleaning the gutters. But doing it a couple times a year will go a long way toward protecting your home from sneaky water damage.

(And I know I say this all the time, but water damage that goes unnoticed or unaddressed can take a serious - and expensive -  toll on your home.)
